DETROIT 187 - REVIEW EPISODES 1 AND 2

EPISODE 2 - GRADE C+

Detroit 187....episode 2 is a whole lot better than pilot..... a C+

The thrill of seeing Detroit venues - doesn't make a successful show...

They continue to make the homicide cops look bad / stupid - arresting the brother with force in a restaurant (with no "PROOF" ) - he went to work even after his brother was killed, because he needed money...if he knew about insurance policy he would have been at home or a bar drinking grey goose....

They let Goat go...even though he may have had motive - because they had no "PROOF"..
they could have taken him in for questioning...and he wouldn't have been killed

Fitch - goes it alone to arrest a possible homicide suspect - and again stands in front of the door waiting to get shot - the suspect may have seen him drive up...
and trying to clean up the shooting of his partner - instead of letting it go - it was poorly written - and something that should not have happened..

And professionals may have mispronounced Polish names - but would have not made fun -
and would have apologized - asking for correct pronunciations...oh i am forgetting this was part of the 'humor' - i just keep missing the 'humor'

It got better....but not enough to make a national audience leave - Good Wife or Parenthood - I think....

EPISODE 1 - GRADE C

Once the Detroit visuals fade into the story, and everyone is thrilled to see Detroit landmarks on TV - you are left with the story, and Detroit 187 is just an average cop show - whether anyone watches it, beyond the first episode depends on what is on other channels.

OMG...people may like Detroit 187...but from police standpoint its embarrassing and to think, a DPD Lieutenant is a consultant....????

We dont use Captain rank - that is basic ...

Police 101 - don't stand in front of a door you want to enter...especially with a homicide suspect possibly inside

No supervisor would let a PO go into a barricaded gun man situation - no way,
and if ERU - was there they would have shot the guy when he lowered the shotgun..

Throwing up??? dpd officers would have seen numerous homicides as PO - by the time you get to homicide...you shouldn't wouldn't do that....(maybe because of stench from old dead decomposing body - but not homicide).

And NEVER would you unhandcuff a homicide suspect in a hall way !!! a cop shot - that was embarrassing makes DPD look like stupid homicide investigators...AND AND
a cop get shot because of this - critically shot - that's not right.

I hope the show is a success for Detroit - $25 mill is a good investment - but I hope they tighten up the scripts and make it more realistic - while still being entertainment - but stupid is stupid and that is not entertaining or good for Detroit PD...

PS: if someone had done some 'pre search' Detroit doesn't use '1 8 7' to refer to homicide (California term) a better title - Detroit Squad 7...but that time has passed, but it seems if you are going to base a story in a city - you would use local terms...

what do you think??? leave a comment

GODBEE - DETROIT DESERVES BETTER..BING WRONG

Mayor Bing has committed another error of judgement, in appointing Ralph Godbee, as Detroit Police Chief.

Godbee should have been disqualifed and replaced, after revelations of a text/sex scandal with Lt. Monique Paterson, who was having an affair with then Police Chief Warren Evans, who was having an affair with Patterson. Godbee is a married man.

Godbee also, has been tainted with fund raising efforts involving the DPD, for disgraced felon Mayor Kilpatrick.

Bing should make public, the seven (7) candidates that he said were considered for the job, because he claimed he would conduct a 'national search' and because there are reports that NO national search was conducted. Bing should also, make public his criterion for police chief.

Bottom line - Detroit and Detroit police officers deserve better - Crime should be the number one issue - and having a respected, honest, ethical police chief is not to much to ask - except maybe in Detroit.

ps: another view

Response to Patricia (the original one) 9/20/10, 10:07 AM.

One of the primary reasons the Detroit Police Department suffers is that they keep recycling the same leaders. Most organizations that have been plagued with corruption or bad leadership make corrections by replacing the entire leadership that was in place during the time of the corruption (i.e. the entire police command staff during the Kilpatrick Administration).

DETROIT'S NEW POLICE CHIEF -

NEW DETROIT POLICE CHIEF....NOT GODBEE ??

Is Detroit a 2nd Class City, an afterthought?

Bing failed to conduct a national search for police chief - as promised - Why???

Gary Brown, Detroit City Councilman, says NO ONE wants the job of Detroit Police Chief. He has no confidence that if a national search had been really conducted, that NO ONE of stature would have applied? How wrong is that????

John Bennett, Detroit Police Officer (WWW.DETROITUNCOVERED.COM) has his sights set too low for a new Detroit Police Chief and that has been, and is a problem, that must be overcome, if Detroit Police Department is to become respected by the community and an effective crime fighting community orientated department.

Hiring standards must be raised: age to 21, education level to two (2) years of college, no misdemeanor of felony convictions, and a clean driving record. There are racists who would oppose this, claiming Detroit couldn't recruit black applicants or that black applicants would be excluded, and only white applicants would be hired - foolish - Detroit would recruit at colleges and black applicants will come to Detroit Police Department. Diversity would be served and an educated police officer is the best policy against citizen complaints.

We need a nationally respected police chief - not tied to the politics, nepotism, croynism, favoritism, that has plagued the department for over 30 years. A clean break from the past - the new chief must be the best and brightest that can be found. The new chief must be given free reign to change, improve and upgrade the department from recruits to the executives who will help him recreate a respect and admired police department.

The chief must not report to a deputy mayor - but only to the Mayor himself, and work with the city council.

Detroit must go to Washington, DC and get grant money and federal aid - Detroit cannot reform itself without federal money to train - new and veteran officers, and to give them the equipment and tools to be effective in the 21st Century.

Detroit will only become a great city, with improved police, fire, EMS services and good schools - that is the foundation for a renewed city. It is time to Go for It.

Bing has not conducted a National Search for Police Chief -
Ralph Godbee should not be the new Detroit Police Chief, under any circumstances. He is a product of the nepotism, favoritism, cronyism and inbred culture that has plagued the Department for 30 years.

Was Chief Joseph E. Thomas, of Southfield, asked (Dennis Archer's first choice), Chester Logan, Steve Dolunt, Nate Topp, or any of the Bully-Cummings firees..?

WWJD - IGNORE - CRACKPOT, PASTOR TERRY JONES

WHAT WOULD JESUS DO ????

He would probably ignore the crackpot masquarading as a Christian - Pastor Terry Jones, of Florida, with a following of less than 50 people, in his effort to gain media celebrity status, by threatening to burn the Muslim holy book, the Qur'an.

He would castigate the news media, for making Jones a media celebrity for threatening a despicable act - for giving the crackpot natioanl and international media attention and creating an immediate threat to US troops, tourists and foreign
US residents.

The US has any number of crackpots, lunatics, media wannabees, but we should not give attention to them to the point of making them and their causes a local or national concern.

There are numerous ways to protest the tragedy of 9/11 - ways to remind people of those lost, but also to remind people that we are the USA - and that we tolerate crack pots, lunatics and media wannabees - but do not celebrate them.

The news media has a responsibility to report the news, not create the news, so they should drive away their satelite trucks, put away their cameras and notebooks and let Porter, live in obscurity, now after his 15 minutes of fame.

So Terry Jones, you have had your day - don't endanger US lives any longer, humbly
withdraw your notice to burn the Qur'an, and think of WWJD...
